Proparco and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) are going to conduct a study on waste management and treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa, Morocco and Egypt. The objective is to identify projects that can reduce the number of illegal landfills and the amount of household waste burned, by setting up a better collection and treatment system.
Client presentation
It is a project jointly appraised with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank, under the Joint Collaboration Framework Agreement.
Project description
Proparco and IFC aim to come up with technically and financially viable solutions to address the issue of the collection and treatment of municipal and industrial waste in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as in Morocco and Egypt. The objective is to conduct a study which should:
- Complete the existing inventory to provide information on the volumes, waste characterization, etc.;
- Identify all the formal and informal players and existing technological solutions in the entire sector (collection, transfer, sorting, pretreatment, treatment, recycling, landfill);
- Recommend actions/projects to be implemented to promote the involvement of the private sector;
- Propose and scale solutions and facilities adapted to the context;
- Establish an environmental and social analysis;
- Prepare the downstream markets.
