Proparco is financing the construction of a gas conditioning unit for IEFCL’s nitrogen fertilizer production in Nigeria. The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the company’s fundamentals by developing certain inputs and increasing the export competitiveness of nitrogen fertilizers. The project is part of IEFCL’s commitment to adopt a production process in line with the highest international standards.
Client presentation
IEFCL is a Nigerian fertilizer manufacturing company and a subsidiary of Indorama, one of the Asian leaders in petrochemical derivatives. After only 18 months in operation, IEFCL has become the leading nitrogen fertilizer (urea) manufacturer and exporter in Nigeria, with 60% of its production exported to Latin America and West Africa. Proparco has supported the company during the key stages of its development: in 2012, by financing the first production line, and in 2018 for the second line.
Project description
This investment will finance the construction of a gas conditioning unit (FCU II) on the second nitrogen fertilizer production line in Port Harcourt. This facility is the same as an existing conditioning unit.
Project impact
On the environmental front, the project should reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of Line II by 74,000 teq CO2 a year. The project will also strengthen the company’s fundamentals by developing certain inputs, which will increase the export competitiveness of nitrogen fertilizers. Finally, the project is part of IEFCL’s commitment to adopt a production process in line with the highest international standards and avoid flaring the gas used for urea production.
On the social front, the project should contribute to creating 60 jobs in 5 years for the operation of the FCU II (the number of jobs for the construction is not available).
