In Brazil, Proparco supports Frooty to strengthen sustainable açaí production
Published on
Proparco grants a senior loan of 10MUSD to Frooty Comércio e Indústria de Alimentos S.A., a leading player in the Brazilian açaí market, to support its development and promote sustainable agricultural practices in the açaí value chain. This financing will enable the company to meet its working capital needs and invest in the maintenance and renewal of its facilities.
Frooty specialises in the production of açaí pulp and sorbet. Açai is an essential fruit of the Amazon region known for its exceptional nutritional properties. The company sources directly from local communities that harvest açaí berries in the forest, ensuring a sustainable and traceable production. Since 2018, Frooty has collaborated with more than 600 families, supporting the creation of cooperatives. The company provides families with technical and financial support and implements financial education initiatives and alternative income solutions to offset the low harvest season.
Frooty obtained For Life certification in 2018, and has built a strong reputation for its ethically sourced products and longstanding partnerships with local communities in the Amazon. This recognition demonstrates its adherence to strict sustainable development criteria. By 2023, 60% of its suppliers were certified For Life or organic. The company continues to drive positive impact by helping producers enhance productivity without the use of pesticides or irrigation and by strengthening forest conservation efforts.
This project aligns with Proparco’s strategy to contribute to reducing inequalities and strengthening economic inclusion. It directly supports Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities).
In line with France’s investment strategy in Brazil, this project contributes to the country’s commitment to investing €1 billion in the Amazon’s bioeconomy. It also supports the Franco-Brazilian partnership aimed at fostering sustainable economic development while protecting tropical forests. through projects that balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
