Proparco, the French development finance institution and private sector arm of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group, has announced its results for 2025. Despite a challenging global environment, the institution signed €2.5 billion worth of projects in 2025, including €924 million dedicated to the African private sector. This reflects Proparco’s steadfast commitment to the continent, which will be highlighted at the Business Forum it is co-organizing during the “Africa Forward” Summit to be held on 11 May in Nairobi, Kenya.

In 2025, of all financing mobilised in Africa, nearly 47% was provided in the form of loans, and around 20% as equity investments. In addition, close to 20% was allocated to trade finance, a key instrument to secure commercial flows, support strategic imports, and strengthen the liquidity of local banks, particularly in constrained environments. This breakdown illustrates Proparco’s commitment to deploying a complementary range of financial tools in support of African private sector development.

Africa remains at the heart of Proparco’s strategy and its leading geography, reflecting its longstanding partnerships across the continent to foster the emergence of African champions. Between 2022 and 2025, Proparco committed more than €4.6 billion in Africa.

Proparco has significantly strengthened its ties with the African private sector, prioritising renewed partnerships across key sectors addressing major continental challenges: the energy transition, connectivity and sustainable infrastructure, healthcare, industry and agribusiness (notably through the FARM initiative – Food & Agriculture Resilience Mission – see box below), as well as entrepreneurship via Choose Africa, its flagship initiative to support African entrepreneurial ecosystems. In 2025, €450 million was mobilised in support of African SMEs and start-ups*.

FARM: strengthening Proparco’s action in agricultural value chains in Africa

Launched in 2022 by the President of the French Republic in the context of the Russia–Ukraine conflict and its impact on food security in Africa, the FARM initiative (Food & Agriculture Resilience Mission) includes a private sector component deployed by Proparco. Between 2023 and 2025, Proparco targeted agribusiness companies, SMEs, and financial institutions, providing nearly €565 million in financing, representing an average of €190 million per year, in support of agricultural value chains across the continent. Beyond financing and investment, Proparco also contributes its expertise and plays an active role in connecting stakeholders across Africa’s agricultural and agri-food sectors.

Proparco co-organizes the “Africa Forward” Business Forum

The “Africa Forward” Summit, jointly organized by France and Kenya in Nairobi on 11–12 May, will showcase partnerships between France and the African continent with the aim of accelerating cross-border investment and developing concrete solutions to shared challenges. Key priorities include health, food sovereignty, digital transformation, access to energy, and connectivity.

As part of this event, Proparco, alongside Bpifrance and Business France, is co-organizing the “Africa Forward |Inspire & Connect” Business Forum, under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron and Kenyan President William Ruto.

This forum is a key part of the Summit, bringing together 1,500 business leaders, investors, and public decision-makers, and giving a voice to economic actors at the heart of business relations between France and Africa.

Beacon Power Services: helping Africa’s tech sector improve electricity distribution efficiency

Beacon Power Services (BPS) is a Nigeria-based start-up specializing in the development of solutions specifically designed for African power grids.

Across the region, distribution networks lose around 23% of the electricity they distribute, undermining utilities and limiting reliable access to power. Through its smart solutions, BPS is transforming electricity distribution across sub-Saharan Africa.

The start-up helps utilities reduce losses and increase revenues, while ensuring customers receive accurate and transparent billing. By improving efficiency and rebuilding trust between utilities and consumers, BPS contributes to more resilient energy systems and supports long-term economic growth.

Check out the latest episode of our “Voices for Change” series featuring Bim Adisa, CEO and founder of Beacon Power Services (BPS), who explains how smarter data and technology can transform electricity distribution across sub-Saharan Africa.
