Proparco has allocated a 3rd loan for USD 30m to a longstanding partner, Tereos. This financing will allow the company, which is one of the largest sugar-ethanol producers in Brazil, to build biogas production units to reduce its CO2 emissions and install wastewater treatment units.
Client presentation
Tereos Sugar & Energy Brasil (“TSE”), one of the five largest producers in the sugar-ethanol sector in Brazil, is a Brazilian company taken over in 2001 by the French sugar cooperative Tereos SCA Group (“Tereos”), one of the French leaders in the agro-industry. Tereos is a union with over 12,000 cooperative members and has recognized expertise in processing beet, sugarcane, cereals and potatoes.
Project description
This 3rd loan to Tereos by Proparco will finance the construction of three biogas production units at the Cruz Alta, Tanabi and São José plants, the installation of water treatment units in the company’s seven plants located in the State of Sao Paulo and cogeneration investments in the Severinia plant.
Project impact
The expected impacts of this new loan are as follows:
- Access to an improved electricity service, as it is more sustainable, for some 57,000 beneficiaries of the Brazilian grid over the next five years;
- Support over 11,000 jobs over the next five years, including some 8,000 jobs at Tereos;
- A significant reduction in the quantity of water consumed by Tereos by financing several wastewater treatment plants.
The project will thereby contribute to SDGs n° 7 (Affordable and clean energy), n° 8 (Decent work and economic growth), n° 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and n° 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change)
