Proparco has allocated a grant to Solengy, a Haitian company specialized in off-grid systems, to meet increased energy demand in the country.
Client presentation
Solengy was set up in 2007 and is specialized in the design, installation, operation and marketing of off-grid solar solutions, through a leasing mechanism, for residential and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) clients. Since its creation, the company has installed more than 120 projects with a total installed capacity of 1.5 MW and 6.9 MW of storage for SME and corporate clients such as Digicel, Heineken and Banque de l’Union Haïtienne. The company markets several products and solutions tailored to the realities of Haiti:
- A modular system for the deployment of residential and C&I photovoltaic systems with different capacities
- Solar panel lighting for mobile phone recharging
- A sales kiosk with refrigerators, a TV and advertising signs powered by solar panels
- A solar cart with a refrigerator, mobile phone recharging and a sound system
- An urban lighting system using solar energy
Project description
With a per capita GDP of USD 700 and a GDP of USD 8bn, Haiti is the only LDC in the Americas and the world’s 15th poorest country (HDI 170th rank/189). It has a low electricity access rate: only 45% of the population benefits from it (79% in urban areas and 3.5% in rural areas).
The project consists of financing from Proparco to Solengy to finance the development of the solar project portfolio for Commercial and Industrial (C&I) clients.
Project impact
The project will have the following impacts:
- Access to clean and affordable electricity for several Haitian companies (the final number of companies will depend on the size of each system)
- More than 100 jobs created or maintained (direct and indirect in the value chain) through the installation and commissioning of off-grid solar systems developed through the financing
- 160 tCO2eq of emissions avoided per year
The project will thereby contribute to Sustainable Development Goals 7 (“Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”), 8 (“Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”), and 13 (“Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”).
