Proparco has allocated an ARIZ portfolio guarantee to the Palestinian microfinance institution Asala for the development of its activity with women and young entrepreneurs in rural areas.

Client presentation

Asala was set up in 1997 and is the fourth largest microfinance institution in Palestine. Its mission is to develop women’s entrepreneurship in Palestine and it targets vulnerable people, such as women, young people and people in rural regions. Historically, these people do not have access to traditional commercial banks and therefore face more difficulties during economic slowdowns. Women make up 70% of Asala’s client portfolio.

Project description

The USD 1.3m ARIZ portfolio guarantee allocated by Proparco will allow Asala to continue its activity to support the empowerment of the most vulnerable entrepreneurs in Palestine. The project demonstrates Proparco’s commitment to support the private sector in fragile countries and is strengthening its presence alongside microfinance institutions in Palestine and the MENA region.

The project will have a number of impacts: 

  • 117 jobs created and maintained

  • EUR 1.95m of investments supported in the private sector
