By investing in Global Tea, Proparco is supporting the expansion in Africa of a company manufacturing FairTrade and Rainforest Alliance certified tea, coffee and macadamia. It is also a major employer of women in Kenya and Malawi and supports the livelihoods of tens of thousands of smallholders throughout the region.
Client presentation
Global Tea was set up as a trading company in 1992 by Nadeem Ahmed, its Executive Chairman. It has since developed to include tea blending, coffee and macadamia plantations throughout East Africa. In the region, the company markets the main tea brands in East Africa, Kericho Gold and Baraka Chai. Global Tea is a supplier of choice for a variety of multinational companies whose products are sold in supermarkets and catering outlets all over the world.
Project description
The proposed investment will help Global Tea finance the construction of a new tea packaging facility in Mombasa and support the Group’s expansion plans in Africa.
Project impact
This project should support 25,800 jobs over the next 5 years. It should also have significant economic benefits at national level (Kenya) by generating an annual amount of government revenue in foreign currency equivalent to EUR 2.9m, as well as at regional level (Ethiopia and potentially Burundi). On the environmental front, Global Tea’s entire coffee production in Malawi (600 tons of beans a year) is Rainforest Alliance certified.
The project will contribute to SDGs n° 8 (Decent work and economic growth) and n° 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure).
