With a USD 10m loan, PROPARCO is supporting the development of the loan portfolio of AMRET, a Cambodian microfinance institution (MFI). AMRET is mainly based in rural areas, where many Cambodian microenterprises and SMEs do not have access to basic financial products. AMRET contributes to the financial inclusion of unbanked populations and 70% of its clients are women.
Client presentation
AMRET is Cambodia’s second largest microfinance institution in terms of portfolio size and had 242,548 borrowers at the end of December 2018. AMRET employs 4,100 people and has 158 branches covering Cambodia’s 25 provinces. It was certified Smart Campaign in July 2016 and respects the client protection principles. The MFI is mainly based in rural areas.
Project description
A USD 10m loan to the Cambodian microfinance institution (MFI) AMRET to support the development of its loan portfolio and strengthen its regulatory capital base.
This project is part of the 2X Challenge initiative. This multi-stakeholder initiative aims to support projects that empower women as entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees and consumers of products and services, and increase their participation in the economy.
This initiative thus contributes to Sustainable Development Goal #5 (Gender Equality).
Project impact
The project will contribute to the financial inclusion of unbanked populations. It should provide access to basic financial services and products in Cambodia for some 10,820 beneficiaries (microentrepreneurs, microenterprises and SMEs). The MFI particularly supports women, who account for 70% of clients.
